Whether for an allergy, intolerance, or preference eating gluten-free is very common for many of us these days and as a dietitian, it’s important to me to create nutritious pumpkin recipes that everyone can enjoy. In this list of gluten-free pumpkin recipes, there’s something for everyone from quick pumpkin snack recipes to savory pumpkin meals that are delicious in the fall — all made gluten-free.

best healthy gluten free pumpkin recipes

Just a few years ago eating gluten-free might have meant eating something incredibly bland and lacking in texture and flavor. That’s not the case with any of these pumpkin recipes that are some of my favorites I look forward to enjoying every fall. None of the recipes are overly complicated and most utilize a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend or a combination of almond and gluten-free oat flour. And some are flourless!

You can also feel good knowing pumpkin is adding more nutrition to every bite of each of these recipes. Pumpkin truly is a fall superfood that’s packed with vitamin A, C, E and fiber and potassium. In addition to the nutrition boost, I think what I love most about is how versatile it is — something you will see many times on this list of gluten free pumpkin recipes I hope you enjoy for the season.

Is Pumpkin Gluten Free?

Yes, pumpkin is naturally gluten-free. Pumpkin is a gluten-free vegetable (all vegetables are gluten-free!) that’s packed with nutrition from vitamins A, C, E as well as fiber and potassium. It’s great to add to your diet in the fall and I recommend keeping a can or two in your pantry year-round to add to smoothies, baked goods, pasta dishes, and more.

Is Pumpkin Puree Gluten Free

Yes, canned pumpkin puree is gluten-free. It’s important to make sure it’s pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling as pumpkin pie filling typically has added sugar and some may even contain gluten.

Healthy Gluten-Free Pumpkin Recipes

In this article, you will find many healthy pumpkin recipes that are gluten-free and just as delicious as anything made with wheat flour. Fall is such a special time of the year for baked goods and recipes infused with seasonal produce and that is part of the inspiration behind many of my recipes.

Some of the recipes on this list are also dairy-free and most are lightly sweetened with maple syrup to bring down the added sugar.

Gluten-Free Pumpkin Desserts

There’s a wide variety of gluten-free pumpkin desserts on this list. See here and below for a perfect pumpkin treat for the season

There are even recipes that incorporate apples and pumpkin which would be great for after fall apple picking (hello pumpkin apple baked oatmeal!).

My fall twist on the viral marry me chicken made with pumpkin puree for the season! Pumpkin perfectly complements the chicken, mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes in this recipe and makes it extra creamy and delicious. Easily made in one pan, this recipe is gluten free and can be made dairy free.

The viral marry me chicken has been on my list to make for so long so I decided why not put a pumpkin spin on it for fall and finally make it for dinner and spoiler alert it came out amazing! Creamy and delicious and so easy to make, I know you’ll love this one pan meal for a cozy fall meal this time of year.

Pumpkin puree complements the mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes and chicken so well, plus it adds more flavor and nutrition to every bite. Pair this pumpkin chicken recipe with rice, pasta, or mashed potatoes and store leftovers in the fridge for a great lunch the next day. On busy weeknights in the fall when you want something cozy and uncomplicated, this ones for you!

Pumpkin baked feta pasta is a delicious, seasonal twist on the viral TikTok baked feta pasta. Baked feta with garlic, shallot and sage mixed with pumpkin puree becomes the perfect pasta sauce that makes for a cozy and delicious fall meal.

Pumpkin Feta Pasta

I’m bringing this 2020 baked feta pasta trend that went viral on TikTok back but this time with a pumpkin twist for fall! Pumpkin feta pasta will be your new favorite way to enjoy a cozy pasta dish this fall. Every noodle is covered with a silky smooth pumpkin sauce that’s warm and cozy for the season!

Fall calls for warm meals on chilly nights and while I love a good pumpkin baked good, savory pumpkin meals like chilis, pasta bakes and soups get me just as excited! Not many other fruits or vegetables are as versatile as pumpkin is and that’s one of the reasons I love it in the fall and all year round.

Pumpkin Feta Pasta

Pumpkin is so good made into a pasta sauce which got me thinking — could I mix it into feta cheese for baked feta pasta?! If you’re reading this you know the answer is yes and I’m so excited that this feta cheese pasta recipe with pumpkin turned out even better than I imagined when I first set out to make it!

Your house will smell amazing while the garlic, shallot and sage bake with the feta cheese and once golden and fragrant all you have to do is stir everything together with the pumpkin puree and pasta water for this pumpkin pasta recipe. It’s all about this pumpkin sauce and let me tell you — it’s good!

This sauce is made without cream. Instead it gets its creaminess from the baked feta cheese. Once the feta is baked and the garlic, sage and shallots are roasted and golden brown everything comes together really quickly for this meal that would be perfect to make for a girls dinner or any get together in October.

Pumpkin Nutrition

Pumpkin truly is a fall superfood — it’s packed with vitamin A, E, and C which are all super good for skin health and immunity, plus it’s a good source of potassium and fiber. Not only does it add fall flavor to anything you add it too but you can feel good knowing you’re getting extra nutrition in there too!

Overall, this recipe is really simple and made with nutritious ingredients making it a healthy pumpkin pasta bake to enjoy this fall. I recommend pairing it with a source of protein like chicken or salmon. You could also us chickpea or lentil-based pasta to give it some more plant-based protein.

I haven’t tried it you could make this using vegan feta for a dairy free version (I’m not sure if that bakes the same!)

Ingredients for Pumpkin Feta Pasta

  • Penne Pastayou could use whatever pasta shape you like for this recipe — penne works really well! Use gluten free or lentil based pasta if you prefer.
  • Pumpkin Puree I use Libby’s pumpkin puree for nearly all of my pumpkin recipes.
  • Feta Cheeseyou will need a block of feta for this recipe.
  • Garlic the garlic will smell amazing while it bakes and flavor the pumpkin sauce nicely.
  • Shallot shallot complement the pumpkin in this recipe so well!
  • Sagesage and pumpkin are a dynamic flavor duo. They just go together SO well!
  • Olive Oil
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Salt & Pepper

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes

Equipment

  • 1 9X13 baking dish
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • 1 cutting board
  • 1 knife

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 8 oz. block of feta cheese
  • 2 small/medium shallots, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, cut lengthwise into thirds
  • 4-5 sage leaves
  • 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. freshly cracked pepper + more for garnishing at the end
  • 1 lb penne pasta
  • 2 cups pasta water
  • 2/3 cup pumpkin puree

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 415 degrees F. Add olive oil to the dish and place the block of feta in the middle. Add salt and pepper. Bake for 20 minutes (see notes).
  • Remove from oven and carefully add shallots, garlic and sage making sure they are covered in the olive oil. Place back in the oven for an additional 10-12 minutes. At this point the shallots and garlic should be roasted and soft and the sage crispy.
  • Next, cook the pasta according to package directions. Reserve 2 cups of pasta water.
  • Remove the feta from the oven, use a spoon to break it up and mix it with the garlic, sage and shallots. Stir in pumpkin puree and 1 cup pasta water until a smooth and creamy pasta sauce begins to form.
  • Add in pasta and stir together. Add more pasta water 1/2 cup at a time (in total I added an additional 1 cup) until all the noodles are covered in the sauce and it's smooth and creamy. Top with freshly cracked black pepper and enjoy!

Notes

I’m recommending baking the feta first before adding the garlic, shallots and sage so they don’t burn. Since we’re baking at a high temperature I found this to work best.

This pumpkin cream cold brew recipe is the fall drink of your dreams! Super-silky smooth and full of that pumpkin flavor we all know and love, you’ll fall in love with this homemade oat milk cold brew recipe that is better than the Starbucks version!

homemade Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew (Starbucks Copycat)

It truly isn’t pumpkin season until you’ve had your first pumpkin coffee. And although it might still be 90 degrees out where you are (it is here for me!), once you take that first sip suddenly it’s all about boots, cozy sweaters, pumpkin patches, and baking a loaf of pumpkin bread. Am I right or am I right?!

If you follow me on Instagram then you know I’m a fan of pumpkin year-round, and especially in the fall. I saw a funny meme the other day that said there are only two seasons. Fall and waiting for fall. I couldn’t agree more!

What is a Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew with Sweet Cream Cold Foam?

New in 2019, the pumpkin cream cold brew was Starbuck’s newest addition to the pumpkin spice latte family. They describe it as a “super smooth fall treat” and I’ve got to say, I totally agree. The pumpkin cream cold foam is uber silky and super pumpkin-y.

It’s essentially cold brew coffee (ice, with brewed coffee) with vanilla syrup added, and topped with a semi-sweet pumpkin cream cold foam topping. The topping is made from cream and pumpkin spice sauce.

If you haven’t tried it and love all things pumpkin, it’s simply a must. But for the days you want to make coffee at home, this recipe is the perfect stand in!

Homemade Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew vs. Starbucks’ Version

This recipe gives Starbucks a run for its money. Here are a few reasons why my recipe wins over Starbucks’ in my opinion:

  • Made dairy free (theirs is not)
  • Lower in sugar (theirs has 31 grams)
  • Cheaper (I didn’t calculate cause math’s not my thing but I’m assuming here!).

I know you’ll love it! So let’s start at the beginning and make this delicious pumpkin coffee drink at home!

Homemade Starbucks Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew Recipe Ingredients

ingredients for pumpkin cream cold brew milk spice pumpkin vanilla extract
note: your pumpkin puree doesn’t have to be organic for this recipe

1. Cold brew or iced coffee

Starbucks uses cold brew in the traditional drink but you could totally use iced coffee too. Any cold brew will work — use your favorite!

2. Milk: Unsweetened oat milk, other non-dairy, or dairy milk of your choice or dairy free heavy whip

I used oat milk in this recipe because it has a higher fat content than other non-dairy milks like almond. This makes it thicker and gives it those silky-smooth vibes. I ended up testing this recipe with two different oat milks and it worked well with both. My favorite oat milk to use for coffee is this one.

This year I also made the recipe with this Califia Farms dairy free heavy whip which turned out super similar to the Starbucks version because it’s super thick just like heavy cream but dairy free. If you can find it at a store near you, I definitely recommend! I usually find it at Target or Whole Foods

If you prefer cow’s milk, you can sub that in for the oat milk too!

3. Pumpkin puree

Hopefully you’ve stocked up because if you’re going to make any recipe you see on this blog you’re going to need it! P.S. make sure it’s pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie mix. Pumpkin puree is just pumpkin while pumpkin pie mix contains added sugar.

Most coffee shop versions do not use real pumpkin which is another reason why I love this version — you get to reap the nutritional benefits of REAL pumpkin in your coffee. Win, win.

4. Maple syrup

Maple syrup offers the perfect amount of sweetness without being overpowering in flavor. Honey would also be a great natural sweetener to use in this recipe.

5. Pumpkin spice or cinnamon

Either one of these will work! If you can’t find pumpkin spice you can definitely make your own or use cinnamon.

6. Vanilla extract

The Starbucks version contains vanilla syrup. I’m lightening things up with no added sugar from this ingredient by using vanilla extract.

7. Salt

A pinch of salt to really bring out the flavors and doesn’t make it salty tasting by any means.

Equipment Needed to Make This Starbucks Cold Brew Recipe

  • Hand-held frother or whisk This hand-held frother works perfectly!
  • Mason jar — you’re going to add all of the ingredients into a mason jar
pumpkin cream cold foam in a cup on marble table

How to Make Pumpkin Sweet Cream Cold Foam

Add the the oat milk or dairy free heavy whip, pumpkin puree, maple syrup, pumpkin spice or cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt to a frother. You can also use a hand-held frother to get it nice and frothy (a high-speed blender on the highest setting would also work).

How to Make Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew Coffee with Pumpkin Cold Foam

  1. Make the pumpkin cream cold foam. Combine the ingredients for the pumpkin cream cold foam in a mason jar. Froth until combined and use right away or pop it into the fridge.
  2. Get your cold brew ready. Pour a glass of cold brew or iced coffee over ice.
  3. Put it together and start sipping! Pour the pumpkin cream over the cold brew, top with extra pumpkin spice, and enjoy! Use a straw to mix it together — I recommend sipping without a straw though because that way you get more of the foam in every sip.

Alternatively, you can make this recipe by making this homemade pumpkin spice syrup, adding that to oat milk and frothing it and then pouring your cold brew on top!

Is The Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew Made Dairy-Free at Starbucks?!

Unfortunately no, because it is made with heavy cream it’s not dairy free. As of right now there isn’t a way to order it dairy free. Using dairy free heavy whip like I recommend for this recipe gives it such a similar taste and texture to the Starbucks version, you will love it!

How I Order the Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew at Starbucks

Although I’m a dietitian, I’m not the food police! That said, I don’t think it’s the worst thing if you want to treat yourself to the real version of this drink a few times during the season — I certainly do myself because that’s the balance I like to have in my life.

When I do order it from Starbucks, I ask for a couple of modifications for make it lower in sugar.

a healthier way to order a pumpkin cream cold brew at Starbucks

Here’s how I order it when I want to lower the sugar but still get that good pumpkin taste:

  • tall size
  • no vanilla syrup in the cold brew (or ask for sugar-free vanilla syrup)
  • light cold foam — I just say: “Can you do light cold foam on top? About half the regular amount”

A grande would have 2-3 pumps of syrup in the cold brew, which is way too much in my opinion taste and sugar wise! I think one or half would definitely do the trick if you’re looking for something less sweet.

white wine pumpkin pasta sauce

There’s nothing more cozy on a chilly fall night than a bowl of pumpkin pasta. If you’re a pumpkin lover like me, I know you’ll agree pumpkin sauce for pasta is quintessential fall!

My recipe for white wine pumpkin pasta sauce is smooth and creamy and covers every ridge of noodles in warm fall flavor. You can also feel good knowing you’re getting extra nutrition in every bite thanks to how nutritious pumpkin puree is. It’s packed with vitamin A, C, E as well as potassium and fiber.

What You Will Need for this White Wine Pumpkin Pasta Sauce

Pasta

  • Penne Pasta or your favorite pastaI really like pairing this sauce with penne pasta. However most any noodle will work. Bucatini would be another great pasta to use here or rigatoni. Opt for a gluten free version if desired.

Main Sauce Ingredients

  • Pumpkin PureeGet out of your can of pumpkin puree because it’s the star of the show in this white wine pumpkin pasta sauce!
  • White Wine I used a sauvignon blanc wine that I had on hand for this recipe. Most any dry white wine will do and it burns off while cooking so you don’t have to worry about it tasting too much like wine or anything like that. It helps to add brightness to this pasta sauce.
  • Vegetable BrothVegetable broth is a pantry staple of mine for soups and so much more. Here it will help to thin out the pumpkin making it into a sauce.
  • Pasta WaterPasta water is the not-so-secret ingredient in this pasta sauce recipe that marries the sauce to the noodles.Don’t forget to reserve some when draining the pasta water.
  • Parmesan CheeseParmesan gives this sauce a little nutty flavor and contributes to how creamy it is. For a dairy-free option omit or substitute nutritional yeast.

Flavorings

  • Olive Oil You will sauté the garlic and shallot in olive oil at the beginning of this recipe.
  • Fresh SageThe flavors of sage and pumpkin really go together so well and sage gives this pasta sauce a nice warm undertone.
  • Garlic A staple in most all sauces, fresh garlic is part of the aromatic base of this pasta sauce.
  • ShallotShallots are a cross between an onion and garlic and I find that they go really well with pumpkin flavors in savory dishes.
  • Salt & Pepper A little bit goes a long way with these. Add them to taste based on your flavor preferences.
  • Cinnamon Just a dash is going to bring out the warm fall flavors!
  • Fresh Parsleythis is optional if you want to sprinkle some on top for a nice pop of color!

equipment / utensils:

  • wooden spoon
  • colander

Creamy Pumpkin Pasta Sauce with Wine Wine and Sage

Tips for This Pumpkin Pasta Sauce Recipe

Making this recipe is easy and it comes together pretty quickly in one large sauce pan. You will sautée, stir together, and simmer the ingredients. Then blend the sauce in a blender to make it extra smooth and creamy.

One very important step to note is reserving some pasta water when your noodles are done cooking. Pasta water is the secret sauce that’s going to help marry the noodles to the pumpkin sauce. It also ensures every ridge of the noodle is covered in sauce — yum!

Blender Pumpkin Pasta Sauce

Benefit of Including White Wine

The wine wine in this pumpkin pasta sauce brightens up the sauce flavor-wise. The alcohol will burn off while cooking, meaning it will evaporate.

Overall, one of the best ways I can describe this sauce is that it tastes like fall! I’m so excited for you to make it! I hope it will be a pumpkin recipe you come back to every autumn.

What Goes Well With Pumpkin Pasta Sauce?

This recipe is the kind that keeps on giving! If you want to add a boost of protein, pair it with my delicious pumpkin meatballs. Plus, you can even serve the meatballs and pasta sauce as an appetizer and omit the pasta!

  • 1 blender

Ingredients

  • 1 lb penne pasta
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil

  • 1 shallot minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh sage chopped
  • 3/4 cup dry white wine
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese + more for sprinkling on top gated
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • dash of cinnamon
  • 1/2 – 1 cup reserved pasta water
  • fresh parsley optional

Instructions

  • Bring a large pot of heavily salted water to a boil and cook the noodles according to the package instructions for al dente noodles.
  • RESERVE 2 cups of the pasta water once the noodles are done cooking.
  • In a large saucepan over medium-low heat, heat the olive oil and add minced garlic and shallot until fragrant. Add the sage and sauté for 1 more minute.

  • Add the noodles to your saucepan and pour the sauce on top. Stir together and then add in 1/2 up pasta water stirring so that everything is well combined. If you find your sauce is still very thick, add in a little more pasta water at a time.

pumpkin goat cheese dip

Can I be honest about something?! Up until recently I hated goat cheese — absolutely could not do the smell and couldn’t fathom it on anything!

I finally tried it from one of our favorite local butcher shops that always has unique items from local restaurants and totally loved it. Fast-forward to now and I’m putting it on all my favorite salads and looking for new ways to use it like in this pumpkin goat cheese dip!

Pumpkin baked goat cheese is for us pumpkin and goat cheese lovers that also love a nice fall appetizer or charcuterie board — this is the perfect addition to one!

pumpkin goat cheese dip

Creamy Pumpkin Goat Cheese Dip

So much fall flavor is packed into every creamy bite and the flavors of creamy goat cheese, sweet pumpkin, nutty parmesan and warm cinnamon come together so nicely. The honey adds a touch of sweetness but I would definitely still classify this dip as savory, not sweet.

You could definitely also eat this dip cold but I think it tastes extra good pipping hot with crackers or bread!

It’s easy to make (just add everything to a food processor and bake!) if you’re in need of something quick to make and bring to a party. Broiling it for a few extra minutes makes in nice and golden on top, and I definitely recommend drizzling extra honey on top with some fresh herbs for a pop of color.

Ingredients for Baked Pumpkin Goat Cheese Dip

  • Goat CheeseI used a log of plain goat cheese for this recipe.
  • Pumpkin Pureeget out your can of pumpkin because you’re going to need it for this dip (and most other recipes on this site!)
  • Parmesan Cheese Parmesan adding a nice nutty flavor that goes really well with the goat cheese and pumpkin puree.
  • Creme Fraiche or Plain Greek Yogurt Cream fraiche will give this dip a richer flavor, but plain whole-milk greek yogurt is a great stand in if you don’t want to buy creme fraiche.
  • Honey honey balances out the flavors in this dip. It’s not overly sweet by any means.
  • Pumpkin Spice or Cinnamon this fall spices complements the cheese and gives the dip a nice, warm flavor.
  • Salt

equipment / utensils:

  • 8X6 inch oven safe baking dish or bowlthis is the exact one I used (you could get away with using something a bit larger too)
  • food processor
  • spatula

Pairings & Toppings

I topped this baked goat cheese with honey and fresh thyme for a pop of color.

Here are a few ideas for how you can pair this pumpkin dip:

  • with crackers (l love the raincoat crisps that are extra crunchy with nuts & cranberries)
  • with baguette-style bread
  • with raw veggies
  • paired with a charcuterie board

healthy pumpkin breakfast recipes

It’s an unspoken truth that when pumpkin coffee drinks hit the stores, it’s the beginning of fall. I always get super excited when I start to see fall things at the store — it’s just the best time of the year. You can find me decorating my apartment, looking for new pumpkin products, and finding new ways to add pumpkin to recipes from late August to November.

In the fall it just makes sense to make something seasonal for breakfast that’s infused with pumpkin and cozy spices like pumpkin pie spice and cinnamon. So, let’s take a closer look at all the benefits of and options for healthy pumpkin breakfast recipes.

Is Pumpkin Good for Breakfast?

Absolutely! Pumpkin is a vegetable (technically a fruit) that is packed with nutrients, including vitamin A, C, and E as well as potassium, fiber, copper, and manganese. It is also very high in antioxidants which help protect our bodies from disease and can help reduce inflammation.

The best part is, it’s super easy to add to a wide variety of recipes from sweet to savory to reap the benefits of its nutrition all fall long. You can’t go wrong baking it or blending it into something for breakfast during the fall.

What Does Pumpkin Pair Well With?

You’ll notice that in most of these pumpkin breakfast recipes I’ve baked or blended pumpkin puree into a recipe that works for breakfast.

Pumpkin puree goes well with lots of different baked goods, as well as Greek yogurt and cheese. I love how it fits with a wide variety of both sweet and savory recipes making it perfect to not only add to your breakfast recipes, but also lots of other recipes in the fall and year-round.

Make your favorite furry friend an edible birthday pumpkin dog cake for their special day! This healthy dog cake recipe for dogs and humans is made with simple ingredients. It’s safe and delicious for you and your dog!

Dog Birthday Cake Recipe

When my sweet dog Pumpkin turned two, I wanted to make something fun to celebrate how much he means to us, so I baked up this pumpkin dog birthday cake that we could all enjoy made with dog safe ingredients like pumpkin puree, applesauce and yogurt.

This pumpkin dog cake is topped off with a peanut butter yogurt frosting and makes for the perfect birthday cake that you and your dog can enjoy! Maybe it’s a millennial thing to make your dog a birthday cake, but when you’re as in love with your dog as we are with Pumpkin, making a dog birthday cake doesn’t seem that crazy, does it?!

Fall-Wedding-Recap-Pumpkin-the-Dog

Pumpkin is the first dog I’ve ever had so I didn’t really know the type of unconditional love, joy and sweetness you get from a dog until the day we brought him home. Since then he has filled our lives with so much happiness, love and cavalier personality. He’s full of snuggly sweetness, always curious about everything around him, and knows how to get what he wants with those big brown eyes!

I could truly go on and on about all the ways he has made our life better and I know you must feel the same way if you’re looking for a cake to make for your dog’s birthday. Let’s celebrate our very special furry friends!

Pumpkin Birthday Cake for Dogs and Humans

This pumpkin dog birthday cake for dogs and humans is perfect to make for you and your pooch. It’s made with dog and human-safe ingredients, not overly complicated to make, and easy to decorate with your dog’s favorite treats or peanut butter yogurt frosting.

This cake is made with pumpkin puree which is good for us and good for dogs. It gets it get it’s moist texture from unsweetened applesauce which is a healthier way to add sweetness and moisture to baked goods for both dogs and humans.

It tastes like a fall spiced cake that you and your dog can enjoy anytime of the year!

healthy pumpkin dog cake recipe

Dog Birthday Cake Recipe

This dog birthday cake recipe is made especially for your dog but one that you can also eat! It would be fun to make for a dog birthday party, puppy play date or when you want something you and your furry best friend can both enjoy.

My dog loved licking the frosting off this cake. And now it’s become tradition that I make it for him to celebrate his birthday in January. I used peanut butter in a pipping bag on the original cake to make a “2” and a little pumpkin on the cake.

Can You Give a Dog Birthday Cake?

Traditional birthday cakes are most likely made with ingredients that are not safe for dogs, especially chocolate birthday cake. Chocolate birthday cake would be a huge no for dogs as chocolate can be harmful to dogs.

Traditional vanilla or yellow cake may also contain ingredients that are not the best for dogs. I recommend making this recipe for your dog instead!

You and Your Dog will Love This Recipe Because…

  • It’s easy to make (takes less than 1 hour).
  • It’s made with simple ingredients that are all dog safe.
  • It’s made with pumpkin puree which is especially good for dogs and their digestion.
  • It’s totally edible for humans, so you can also eat it!
Dog Birthday Cake Ingredients

9 Ingredients for This Pumpkin Dog Cake Recipe

  • Pumpkin Puree be sure it’s pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie mix.
  • Oat Flour if you can’t find oat flour at the store, simply blend old-fashioned oats in a blender until they are the consistency of flour.
  • Unsweetened Creamy Peanut Butterit’s best to choose unsweetened versions for dogs.
  • Plain Greek Yogurt I used siggi’s, which I like because it’s low in sugar and doesn’t contain any artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols which are not good for dogs.
  • Eggs
  • Unsweetened Applesauce this will help give the cake a subtle sweetness and a moist texture.
  • Cinnamon cinnamon is safe for dogs to eat.
  • Baking Soda

how to make a birthday cake for your dog

Is Yogurt Good For Dogs?

Yogurt is generally safe for dogs to eat. Some yogurts do contain a lot of added sugar and artificial sweeteners. These aren’t good for dogs, so you want to make sure you’re giving them lower in sugar, plain 0% yogurt that doesn’t contain artificial sugars or sugar alcohols.

I recommend a lower in sugar plain 0% yogurt for this dog birthday cake recipe.

I’m not a vet or dog food specialist and every dog is different in terms of the food they can eat. Check with your vet before giving this cake to your dog if you have any hesitation.

Is Peanut Butter Good for Dogs?

Peanut butter is generally safe for dogs to eat. As a dog owner, I’m sure you’ve seen peanut butter in many different dogs treats. When you’re buying it to give to your dog, make sure you are choosing peanut butter that doesn’t have added sugars and no artificial sweeteners. These aren’t good for dogs (and not really humans either!). That is the kind I recommend using in this pumpkin dog birthday cake recipe.

While peanut butter is safe for dogs to eat, it is higher in fat and calories. This might not be the best for all dogs on a regular basis. Chat with your vet about what a safe amount would be to give your dog on a regular basis.

Is Pumpkin Puree Good for Dogs?

Yes, pumpkin puree is good for dogs! Not only is it a fall superfood for humans, but it’s good for dogs too!

When buying pumpkin puree at the store for this dog birthday cake (or any other recipe on my site) make sure it’s pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie mix. Pumpkin pie mix is mixed with sugar and other ingredients.

You just want 100% pure pumpkin and it can be the same can that you would buy at the grocery store for yourself. No need to buy special pumpkin puree from pet stores since they’re probably more expensive.

Health Benefits of Pumpkin Puree for Dogs

Pumpkin puree is safe for dogs to eat and good for their digestion when they are having issues like constipation or diarrhea because it contains fiber.

How Much Can Pumpkin Puree Can You Give Them?

Depending on the size of your dog, 2 tsp – 1 tbsp is a safe amount to give them to help with tummy troubles.

Pumpkin brownie cookie balls are a no bake energy bite that taste like a combination of a pumpkin brownie and a cookie. Made gluten-free with simple ingredients, they’re a great blood-sugar friendly and pumpkin-packed snack for October!

Looking for a fun October snack that’s packed with pumpkin and chocolate?! You’ve come to the right place! These cute little pumpkin brownie cookie balls are just that and super nutritious too. Made gluten and dairy free with almond and oat flour, this recipe requires only a few simple ingredients. They’re great to make ahead and enjoy all week in the fall!

I love having a snack like these pumpkin protein balls on hand to enjoy as part of my breakfast with coffee, after lunch, or anytime I need a little something during the day. They are not overly sweet (sweetened naturally with honey), and you can feel good knowing you’re getting extra nutrition by way of pumpkin puree.

Pumpkin is a great source of vitamin A, C, E, and minerals like potassium and iron. It’s also a good source of fiber and works in a variety of sweet and savory recipes — not many other vegetables can go from muffins to pastas and even dog treats!

These bites have a luxe texture that’s everything you want in a pumpkin ball. Filled with fall spices, that nice bit of chocolate that goes so well with the pumpkin, and a silky smooth texture!

Perfect for October, I know you’ll love snacking on these pumpkin brownie cookie bites all spooky season long! The only thing scary about them is how good they are….eek!

Ingredients for Pumpkin Brownie Cookie Balls

  • Pumpkin Pureejust like in pretty much all of my pumpkin recipes, this recipe calls for pumpkin puree not pumpkin pie filling!
  • Blanched Almond Flouralmond flour it what gives these balls their incredible texture. I haven’t tested this recipe with any other flours.
  • Oat Flourcoconut flour would also work in place of oat flour.
  • Creamy Unsweetened Almond Butter or Creamy Unsweetened Cashew Butterboth work really well to give these bites a nice flavor the doesn’t overpower the pumpkin flavor!
  • HoneyI have’t tried it but you could substitute honey for maple syrup.
  • Cinnamon
  • Raw Cacao Powder or Unsweetened Cocoa Powder see below for the difference.
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • Cloves (optional) — in my opinion cloves really amplify the flavors of pumpkin spice and cinnamon to give these balls that quintessential fall taste and smell!
  • Salt

Equipment / utensils

  • mixing bowl
  • measuring cups
  • spoon
  • whisk
  • cookie scoop

Difference Between Cacao Powder and Cocoa Powder

Cacao powder is basically the less processed version of cocoa powder. Often times cocoa powder also contains sugar and dairy as it’s what is marketed for hot chocolate. If you do find cocoa powder is easier for you to find for this recipe, look for unsweetened versions.

Both cacao powder and unsweetened cocoa powder taste similar — like unsweetened chocolate which is why they’re great to use to give these balls that chocolatey taste!

Because it’s processed less, cacao powder has higher amounts of beneficial nutrients like antioxidants and minerals like magnesium and potassium.

healthy pumpkin recipes for fall

With the fall season comes the excitement for all things pumpkin and we’ve truly seen a pumpkin phenomenon over the past few years with the rise of pumpkin everything. From pumpkin baked goods to pumpkin dog treats, there’s almost nothing that you can’t find a pumpkin version of in the fall.

As a dietitian and pumpkin lover myself, I like making healthier pumpkin recipes in the fall that are unique, fun, and made with simple, nourishing ingredients.

Here is some insight about what makes these fall recipes so good for the fall, and why they’re worth choosing when you’re looking for something delicious and nutritious to make for pumpkin season.

What Can Make Certain Pumpkin Recipes Less Healthy?

While cooked pumpkin and pumpkin puree are nutrient-packed and healthy additions to any meal or baked goods, many sweet pumpkin recipes call for high amounts of added sugar.

And while I’m not saying you can never enjoy the real thing, as a dietitian I think it’s important to find a balance that includes options that are lower in sugar and more nutrient dense. That’s why I’m excited to share this list of pumpkin recipes that are balanced and more blood-sugar friendly with you for the season!

What Makes Healthy Pumpkin Recipes Different?

One thing you’ll notice with these recipes is that I used a lower amount of added sugar, and opt for natural sweeteners like maple syrup and honey when possible.

I also used more nutritious flour options, such as whole wheat flour, almond flour, and oat flour. Some recipes are made with heart-healthy olive oil, and none of the recipes are short on fall spices like cinnamon, ginger and pumpkin pie spice which contain anti-inflammatory benefits.

Many of the recipes also incorporate additional fruits and vegetables, like apples, blueberries and cauliflower, giving you even more nutrition per bite.
